With one in seven people in the United States uninsured, the need for health care for this population is daunting. We must all take a hard look at a real solution. Our belief at INTEGRIS Health is that the solution can only be found one way - through involvement.
In January 1993, INTEGRIS Health opened a free medical clinic in the inner city of Oklahoma City. It is the largest, free, all volunteer clinic in the state. The clinic offers adult and pediatric care, as well as pediatric immunizations, individual nutrition consultations, vision services, and monthly pharmaceuticals are dispensed when available.
On the third Monday of each month, a women’s clinic is offered to all uninsured females between the ages of 49 and 64. This is a joint venture between the clinic and the OU School of Nursing. These services include free clinical breast exams, mammograms and pap smears.
Operating three nights a month (the second, third and fourth Monday) the clinic sees an average of 130 patients each night. In 2005, the Baptist Community Clinic had over 3,500 patient visits. A minimum of 40 physicians, nurses and non-medical volunteers staff the free clinic each evening, which resulted in 3,168 volunteer hours for 2006.
The clinic is located at Olivet Baptist Church, 1201 NW 10th, Oklahoma City.
