When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Meeting for Children and Teenagers
A support group for children and adolescents whose lives have been touched by cancer was held in conjunction with Grupo de Apoyo de Cancer, a cancer support group for Spanish-speaking adult cancer survivors and their families. The support group was established when it was recognized that quite a few children and adolescents consistently attended this hour and a half long adult group and quietly listened to the experiences, stories, struggles and support that adult cancer survivors and their family members shared with one another. The perfect opportunity to create a group especially designed to meet the unique needs of children and adolescents was identified and born. The meetings are designed to provide information, support and education to children and adolescents (5 to 17 years old) to enhance their psychological, behavioral and emotional adjustment when someone they love is living with cancer. Because children and adolescents typically do not yet have the same capacity as adults to openly discuss the ways in which cancer has affected their lives, expressive art interventions were introduced to facilitate their expression of cancer-related feelings.
21st Annual National Cancer Survivors Day “A Celebration of Life” Event
Each year on the first Sunday of June communities across the nation join in celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day with events that unite cancer survivors, families, and friends. It’s a day to recognize the progress that has been made in the early detection, treatment and research of cancer ~ all of which have contributed to cancer survivorship. On June 1, 2008, Central Oklahoma Cancer Center at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center, INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma, ProCure of Oklahoma and Cancer Care Associates joined together to sponsor our annual “A Celebration of Life” event. A total of 235 people attended the celebration, and of those, 103 were survivors and 132 were survivors’ guests. Many of our health care staff and their family members volunteered their time, energy and commitment to make this survivorship event a wonderful success. Survivors and their guests gathered at the Shartel Church of God for the two-hour event, which included a catered luncheon and a series of speakers who gave presentations that focused on the education, awareness, insight and needs of survivors and their loved ones before, during and after their cancer experiences.
Brain Injury Support Group at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation
The Jim Thorpe Brain Injury Support Group was initiated to provide brain injury survivors and their caregivers with continued support as they face the barriers of their injuries. In addition, current patients and their family members are encouraged to attend the meetings so they can connect with other people who have already gone home. Members are divided into two groups, a survivor group and a caregiver group. This format allows participants to express their feelings and issues with people in a similar situation, without the inhibition of having their family members present. In addition to the monthly meetings, the support group participates in a myriad of social activities.
