INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Health Center is one of the oldest hospitals in the state. Originally built to meet the needs of the lead and zinc miners, the Miami hospital opened July 1, 1919. The original structure was a three-story building with a basement and sun porches on each floor. Through the years a number of building additions and renovations have been made, and the basic original structure is still being used today.
INTEGRIS Baptist Regional is located in Ottawa County. In addition to Miami, the hospital’s service area encompasses the entire county, as well as northeast Oklahoma and the adjacent border areas of Kansas and Missouri. More than 59,000 people live in the total service area of the hospital. INTEGRIS Baptist Regional continues to invest millions in the 117-bed facility each year to add technology and expand services, bringing the best in health care to northeast Oklahoma. Recent expansions and renovations include a new ER, new Women’s Center and an expanded laboratory.
Third Graders Go to Work
Third grade students from Wilson Elementary School spent time at INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Health Center as part of the national Third Graders Go to Work program. More than 40 third graders heard presentations this year from hospital employees representing many different careers available in health care including nursing, laboratory, emergency medicine and business services. Students also toured areas of the Miami hospital including the Radiology department and Women’s Center, and were treated to lunch provided by the hospital. The students designed get well cards for delivery to patients during national Hospital Week. “From encouraging students to remain in school to building self-esteem, the Third Graders Go to Work program is an excellent opportunity to help area youth develop skills that will benefit them as future members of the work force. INTEGRIS Baptist Regional takes great pride in collaborating with area schools to help prepare students for the work force,” says Jennifer Hessee, director of Community Development for INTEGRIS Baptist Regional.
Annual Senior Citizens Day
More than 400 Miami area senior citizens took part in free health screenings at INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Health Center’s annual Senior Citizens Day in April. The annual event, held at the Miami Civic Center, includes informational booths, free lunch, entertainment and numerous door prizes. “We had more than 60 area vendors participate in this year’s event,” says Jennifer Hessee, director of Community Development at INTEGRIS Baptist Regional. “From banks and pharmacies to assisted living facilities and home medical equipment sales, vendors showcased a wide assortment of services for senior citizens available right here in our own community.” A variety of free health screenings offered at the event include blood pressure, blood sugar, body fat analysis and grip testing. This was the 21st year for the hospital to host the event, which has become a favorite in the community.
Care Packages Support our Troops
The Health Information Services and Information Technology departments at INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Health Center teamed up to provide service men and women with needed supplies for the holiday season. They filled four boxes totaling more than 170 pounds of books, magazines, T-shirts, health and beauty supplies, candy, food, playing cards, DVDs, video games, New Testament Bibles, air fresheners, water bottles, pens, pencils and more. Employees purchased items, collected donations from area businesses and raised $130 for the postage to mail the boxes.
INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Responds to Tornado Disaster
Most hospitals participate in an annual disaster drill, but on May 10 INTEGRIS Baptist Regional Health Center’s disaster was real. As a deadly EF4 tornado ripped through nearby Picher, Okla., and continued into Missouri, the staff was called to action. From doctors to Dietary, X-ray to Environmental Services, employee response was tremendous. Representatives from nearly every department were on hand to implement disaster protocol and care for the patients and families who came through the Emergency department. More than 45 Miami area EMS workers, 20 from INTEGRIS Baptist Regional, were on scene to triage, treat and transport more than 150 victims to area hospitals.
